8 Day / 7 Night Cruise Murray River Tour – 1st April 2011

Day 1 - Friday 1st April 2011
Adelaide – Murray Bridge - Mannum
Depart Adelaide CBD by coach at 4.00 pm. Travel through the Adelaide Hills to Murray Bridge for our first view of the Murray River. Continue north to the river port of Mannum. Tonight we have a “welcome” dinner arranged.

Day 2 - Saturday 2nd April
Swan Reach – Murray Cliffs - Mildura
We cross the Murray for the first time at Mannum, & head north. Wonderful views of the Murray are found near Bowhill, Nildottie & Big Bend. Pause for morning tea in Swan Reach. Departing the river for a short period, we head east out into the Mallee country, then past Loxton to Paringa. Today we have arranged a barbecue lunch at Heading Cliff. This afternoon we enter Victoria and arrive Mildura late afternoon. Short tour of the town before arriving at our hotel. Dinner tonight where we will be joined by Captain Jock Veenstra.

Day 3 - Sunday 3rd April
Murray & Darling Rivers - Wentworth
Following breakfast we transfer to the Mildura Wharf and join our vessel – “Spirit of the Murray”. Our cruise this morning takes us downstream through Lock 11 and under the Abbotsford Bridge to the junction of the Murray & Darling Rivers. During the afternoon we cruise 38 kilometres along the Darling River and enjoy a picnic lunch. Return to Wentworth for our overnight stay. Dinner at our motel.

Day 4 - Monday 4th April
Ana Branch Station – Frenchmans Creek
Board the “Spirit of the Murray” – returning to the Murray River and pass through Lock 10. Enjoy he scenery at Bates Shallow & Jacksons Reach. A delightful picnic lunch is served on board as we cruise further downstream & view Frenchmans Creek , the entrance to lake Victoria. During the afternoon we will also pass the old steam pump at Kulnine & travel through Lock 9. Late afternoon arrive at Lock 8 where our coach will be waiting to transfer us back to Wentworth. Dinner at our motel.

Day 5 -Tuesday 5th April
Murray Sunset National Park – Customs House - Renmark
Transfer by coach back to Lock 8. The scenery is a delight as we cruise downstream through Lock 7 & past the Murray Sunset National park. We also see Pollards Cutting before stopping at Kulcurna Station for lunch. In the afternoon pass by Scotties Wood Pile, view the ruins of Cal Lal Police Station & the Vic/SA border before stopping at the Customs House at Border Cliffs. It is here we join our coach for the transfer to Renmark. Dinner at our hotel.

Day 6 - Wednesday 6th April
Border Cliffs – Chowilla Station – Bookmark Reserve -
Return by coach to Border Cliffs. Continue downstream through Lock 6 & stop at Chowilla Station for lunch. After lunch undertake a coach tour of the Chowilla flood plain. Reboard our boat, & take in the beauty of the ever-changing river. Our final stage today takes us past large river redgums before arriving at the wharf in Renmark.

Day 7 - Thursday 7th April
Loxton – Banrock Station – Overland Corner - Barmera
We board our boat for our final day cruising the Murray. Pass under the Paringa Bridge & then through Lock 5. This is a beautiful section of the river as we cruise past Nelwart Island & Lyrup before arriving in Berri for lunch. Enjoy a “farewell” lunch to Jock and his crew at the Berri Community Hotel.

Travel downstream once again to lock 4. It is here our coach is waiting, and we say our farewell to the “Spirit of the Murray”. Our journey of exploration along the Murray still has some surprises! Travel to Loxton & then past Kingston on Murray to Banrock Station. It is here we have arranged afternoon tea & wine tasting. Leaving Banrock, skirt Lake Bonney and arrive at the historic Overland Corner Pub. In years past this was a wayside stop for Cobb & Co stage coaches. A casual dinner tonight at this special venue. After dinner travel to Barmera for our overnight stay.

Day 8 - Friday 8th April
Barossa Valley - Adelaide
Today we will travel via Waikerie to Blanchetown where we cross the Murray for the final time.

Arrive in the picturesque Barossa Valley for our final lunch. A short tour through the “valley” & mid afternoon arrive in Adelaide. Drop off in the central CBD at around 3.30pm.
